about lichan

bio

liane chan (b. 1999, Toronto, ON) is a queer Chinese multi-disciplinary artist based in Tkaronto/Toronto. Responding to lived experiences of anti-queerness, sinophobia, and food insecurity, their work uses a range of media, including textiles, painting, sculptural installation, and digital media as tools for self-expression and resistance. Their practice encapsulates the joys of cultural and familial connection, illustrated through memories of food and found objects to articulate diasporic identity, comfort, and nostalgia. Indulging the sinophilic appetite, Chan reveals the interwoven connections between Chinese culture and growing up in Canada.

They hold a BFA in Drawing and Painting (Honours) from OCAD University with a minor in Art and Social Change (2024), and obtained an Ontario College Certificate in Art Fundamentals (Honours) from Sheridan College (2019).

manifesto

I believe in a future where all interlocking systems of oppression and violence are destroyed and overthrown: A future that is rooted in the liberation of all humans and non-humans from white supremacist, capitalist, settler-colonial patriarchy, prisons and policing, and any & all forms of violence.

I am committed to the destruction and toppling of all empires in the face of white supremacy.

I am committed to the return to and of Indigenous land in the face of colonial occupation.

I am committed to the collective and the community in a world of individualism.

I am committed to the moral and physical struggle for liberation.

I believe in the power of art to heal, connect, and destroy.

I honour the queer and trans, Black, Indigenous, racialized, and disabled elders who came before me. I honour the QT/BIPOC, disabled youth and students who come with and beyond me.

I believe in all of us for all of time.
